This week we will be examining the 1931 film, “City Lights”

Hello all,

At the beginning of class, we are going to go over some key terms from the video and that you will see when you read your articles. Here are the terms:

We may play Quizlet to help us learn them.

We separated into groups and were assigned a region on Friday. We will be working on defining our key terms and coming up with our main points. We will be working separately to come up with our terms and points, then we will get into groups to combine our thoughts in preparation for our group presentations. Just a reminder, the articles on your region are located at Khan Academy.

If you are missing class on Monday, just read your assigned article by yourself. If you were not assigned an article, pick one. Skim the article for key terms and define them, then read the article. Come up with several main points for each section. Your main points should effectively summarize the important information from the article.

Hello all,

I hope you had a relaxing weekend and come in ready to learn Monday. We are going to be learning about different types of government. We will start off defining these key terms:

Then we will practice on Quizlet!

Once we get our vocabulary where we need it to be, we will be asking (and hopefully answering!) a fundamental question: What is the purpose of government? Before we can get into the US Constitution, we need to understand some of the philosophical underpinnings of the Founding Fathers. This lesson introduces us to John Locke and Thomas Hobbes, two influential political philosophers during the Enlightenment. We will learn about the State of Nature, Natural Rights, and the Social Contract.

After this lesson, students will be able to…

Identify the basic ideas on government from Thomas Hobbes and John Locke.

Define the terms: state of nature, natural rights, sovereign.

Trace the development of the idea of the social contract from Hobbes and Locke.
